Mom Wombat Says Make War No More!

written by: Phyllis Schwartz

Mom Wombat says, “Make war no more!
No more fighting in or outside my door.”

“Fighting can hurt your heart and head.
Why not make peace instead?”

Mom Wombat says, “Make friends, not war!
Try to get along and don’t keep score.”

“It doesn’t matter who has more toys,
just have fun my girls and boys.”

Mom Wombat insists, “Don’t sneer or pout.
Plus, hold your tongue, don’t stick it out!”

“When tempers get hot, keep your cool.
And if you have bad feelings, talk them through.”

“Don’t look for differences,
but figure out what makes you the same.”

“Don’t tease others,
find a friendlier game.”

“Name calling and brawling never make sense.
Avoid putting up an angry, no-talking fence.”

“Kind words should rule at home or school.
Try to play fair, don’t trick or duel!”

“And please don’t pull anyone’s hair
or gnash your teeth or growl like a bear!”

“If you can figure out what makes you mad,
you’ll be relieved instead of sad.”

“Person to person or state to state,
bullies can be small or big and tall.”

“They’re across the street or across the sea.
They can even be you or me.”

“But on one thing we must agree:
Don’t YOU be a bully!”

“Not even now and then.
Not even to a foe or friend!”

“Instead find new things to do like read something funny,
invent cool games, or let them hug your toy bunny.”

“Take a bike ride and share a snack.
Then laugh some more when you get back!”

“What about writing a poem or silly song?
Singing together will surely help you get along!”

The kids declare, “Mombat you’re right.
It’s better to play fair than fight!”

“To share our kite,
use jokes not might!”

“From now on, we’ll make peace, not war!”

“And like the kites, our hearts will soar!”

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

I wrote this poem with the intention of turning it into a children’s rhyming book and it was released in September of 2023.
