Nevermore

Nevermore

written by: Bartholomew Barker

Silent in the wind I fly
looking down on man and god
silhouetted against stars
ebony feathers invisible

Drawn to the sweet smell of wood
smoke from a decrepit chimney
yellow lamplight on trees
cast through dreary windows

On wood I rap — on glass I tap
the bars of this clumsy creature’s cage
I hide in the shadows almost as deep
as the fool’s sorrow — ready

And when he opens his shutters
the beguiling begins
