Santa’s Sack

Santa’s Sack

written by: Christina Ciufo

Santa’s evergreen-gold
sack falls down
the chimney,
and tumbles out of
the fireplace’s red-charcoal,
bricked mouth,
lying across the Christmas tree.

The sack moves and opens.
Clowns and jesters cartwheel
while dark oak carved
elephants, lions, and giraffes peer out
and a brown, stuffed rocking horse gallops.

Teddy bears
wearing gold and scarlet velvet
ribbons around their necks
crawl out and lie underneath the tree,
with their callow, ebony buttoned eyes
staring upward at the glass ornaments,
like wintry stars.

Toy soldiers with ebony boots
and claret-gold uniforms, in procession
marching out of the sack
while the drums beat in sync
and ballerina dolls,
wearing rosy and ivory tutus
twirl around,
around, and
around the Christmas tree,
while the piano composed notes
plays “Toyland.”
