Signs

Signs

written by: Strahinja Lukićev

Just look at what we’ve done to ourselves…
Allowed our warped thoughts to take over,
Let our shallow flaws rule,
Our streams of self-knowledge fail,
And let our good deeds fade away…

In looking for faults in others and their actions,
We forget how necessary it is to see our own…
We rely on small, childish excuses when life
Shows its darkest side…
And, I repeat, we are comforted; we rely on consciousness,
On the subconscious, on intelligence…
Full of false confidence, we make the wrong decisions,
We ask the wrong questions…
That’s why we get wrong answers…
Answers we don’t often associate with,
But like film critics, we reject them
Because they don’t suit our shallow attitudes…

How many have suffered because of the impossibility
Of seeing simple signs that stand before us,
So obvious yet overlooked?
How much spilled blood has been presumptuously ignored,
How many snake tongues have hissed,
How many whip shots have rung out,
Because of the inability to notice the signs?

I have watched countless times…
Shadows passed by, as if in some kind of sea,
Bypassing like apparitions without eyes or ears,
In a space with black walls and dilapidated clocks…
I watched the suffering, drops of blood, ballads of the sad.
I watched dreams crumble and hopes fade.
I watched the collapse of something we are so silent about,
Looked at as some salvation in the vortex of blindness.

It’s eating away… It’s eating away at my own ignorance,
We allow ourselves to think so conceitedly
That our shallow actions mean something.
We forget that we are just dry leaves in a blizzard,
And that we should let go…
