Spotlight On Writers
Eric Shelman
- Where do you originate from?
I hail from all over Texas and I was born in Fort Worth, Texas, but I lived in Quitman, Yantis, Princeton, Keller, Denton, Jefferson, Winnsboro, Tyler, Sonora, Big Sandy, North Hill Ridge, Mineola, Lindale, Azle, and I moved a whole lot because my step-dad is a general consultant for all sorts of construction and said he was always chasing jobs from town to town. I am now living in Kansas.
- What do you cherish most about the place you call home?
Lakes are beautiful, natural scenery is majestic as well. Love fishing, camping out, having a campfire, bonfires, ringfires, superb barbeque, great hamburgers, and so much more down homemade food, fried catfish, and more.
- What ignites your creativity?
A challenge to write, listening to all sorts of music for inspiration, reading my favorite predecessor poets, poetesses, writers, and playwrights, as well, reading my favorite alive poets, poetesses, writers, works, some television shows spark my creative inspiration, and movies as well. I am my own muse and may write at any given time and at any given moment.
- Do you have a favorite word and could you incorporate it into a poetic phrase?
Abracadabra is my favorite word, and I love how it phonetically sounds and what it means, too.
Magically, majestically, l ask for and will it while saying abracadabra, it appears and happens as I had beckoned it, too.
- What is your pet peeve?
Having to repeat myself is my biggest pet peeve and my second would be whenever someone asks me what my poem is about and they expect me to explain it to them because they can’t comprehend it.
- How would you describe the essence of Eric Shelman?
I am a Southerner from Texas, as I mentioned earlier, but I do the outdoors and nature as well. I was adopted when I was two by my stepdad, and I have always been obsessed with adventures, both in a book and in real life. I am a world traveler, an ex-Navy sailor; I am a rebel. I love to read and write. I have read all sorts of dictionaries and encyclopedias, as well. I first started writing poetry and short stories back in 1999, which was in my eighth-grade English class. I have always focused on two main things with my writing, first is I always strive for authenticity, and diversity and I don’t try to write like anybody else. Of course, I have my heroes and heroines, of old poets and poetesses, and writers and even alive ones today. I love words, rhymes, and rhythms as well.
