“You’re not from here,”
someone said.
“Where are you from,
where’s home instead?”

“From beside the bay,”
I heard myself say,
in quite a
matter-of-factly way.

“Really?”
they replied.
“You grew up
tracking time
by the tide?”

I shook my head
and lowered my eyes.
I never felt
so sheepish inside.

“I don’t know why
I said what I said.
It’s a lie, yet it’s not,”
I softly confessed.
“I’ll explain if I can,
just what I meant.

“They say home is where
we find our heart,
and, mine,
she resides
in a far off port,
for months ago,
I gave her away
to a blue-eyed boy
from beside the bay.

“And, now, it’s all
because of him,
she’s the happiest
she’s ever been.
So, she’s chosen to stay
and live out her days
with the handsome boy
from beside the bay.

“So maybe now
you understand,
I may be here
but, my heart,
she’s there,
and you know
what it is
they always say…

“Home is where
our heart longs to be,
making mine not far
from the churning sea,
found in a quaint
far off place,
‘longside the blue-eyed boy
from beside the bay.”
