The Glimpse

The Glimpse

Emerald stars twinkle on still waters as I float over silver streams, through sleepy woods, and into the great garden. I tease fingertips over moss and vine as dazzling petals of pink, lavender and purest white softly brush against my face. Through the brilliant light, I see brightest yellows and stunning blues; wildflowers gathered in bunches from bush to brook, with bees and butterflies dancing from one to the next. God’s finest perfume fills my nostrils; the sweet scent of summer woodland earth and rich ferns carried on a soft leafy breeze.

The warmth wraps itself around me, and I now understand peace. Precious memories return, filling my heart, comforting, reassuring me I am safe. My father’s smile. His strong arms gently hugging me close. The great protector who I miss so dearly. My mother’s tender kiss upon my cheek. Her eyes reveal an eternal and unconditional love. A bursting love of pride and adoration.

Beyond the watchful squirrels and curious birds, I can see the angels, bathed in golden sunlight, their arms wide, glowing with kindness and affection. They have come for me and I long for their embrace. I float towards the heavens. Only now, as I leave the forest, do I fully appreciate the magnificence of the mighty trees as I lift high above the canopy and towards the welcoming clouds. Towards the final stage of my fading existence.

An electric shock rips through the world, and an intense light pulls me from the warmth, hurling me back into darkness. A sudden jolt of power bursts in my chest, and the blinding light hits my eyes like ice needles. Loud voices and strange faces huddle together over me. Memories of worldly pain return and my mind is flooded with mortal fears and sadness.

My heart beats again.
