The Homecoming
written by: Vidya Venkataramanan
As the hatch
Of the Dragon Freedom Space X
Shut tight,
Astronauts Butch,
Sunita Williams
Nick and Alexsandr,
Strapped in safely,
Undocked from the Satellite
Space station,
That had been home to them for nine
Long months!
Detaching from the Mother Ship,
Was scientific precision,
But it was also
Leaving behind
Memories,
Of a place
Of Ground breaking
Discoveries,
Scientific breakthroughs.
Floating,
Or just walking around in Space,
Defying gravity.
The sojourn
At the Space station
Was a great revelation!
Heading home,
Watched by
Millions,
The Dragon Freedom Space X
So named,
Was bringing home
Heroes,
Of another kind.
Those, that battle
Vulnerability,
Fear,
And standing to lose
Everything so dear!
Up against
Courage,
Fortitude,
Resilience,
You name it
They faced it!
Far out in Space
In a Universe
Many only dream about,
But cannot go there,
Watching the world
From above
As it were,
Months of
Sunrises and sunsets,
Experiencing
Surreal facets
Of life.
What courage
What motivation,
Runs in their blood?
I wonder?
To fly to the moon and back
Like lovers’ promises?
Were they born with stars in their eyes?
Or knowing
Rocket Science?
Did the nursery rhyme, twinkle twinkle little star
Persuade them to
Go find them?
Whatever it was,
Sunita Williams broke glass ceilings,
A Butch (bunch)
Of dreams
Put together
By a NASA team,
Resilient enough
To be stranded
In Space!
Were you closer to
Knowing that
The Universe
Was in you all along?
The descent
Has begun,
The world awaits
The splash down,
Momentous moments,
Defying odds,
Dreams that propelled them
Into the Universe
That we all long to go
To
But not daring to dream that big!
But Sunita did!
From India
To America,
And a flight
To the Universe,
Was but destiny
Chartered!
