The Jack Field

The Jack Field

written by: LB Sedlacek

Stable platform: great engines
on each corner of the drilling rig
to fight the ocean sway

6-Mile Drill: hundreds of
Interlocking 90-foot sections of
iron buoyant sidings reducing weight

Entry Point: entering the
seafloor at exactly the right
point avoiding air pockets or faults

Journey dangerous: the drill
travels through numerous pressure zones
being careful to stay on course

X marks: the spot
in bedrock mounds formed by oil
pushing upwards indicating hot spots

The Jackpot: oil is
trapped in squishy porous rock
negotiating freezing waters
boiling oil and seismic uncertainty

Making it: all worthwhile.
