The Pages of My Life

The Pages of My Life

When I am old and gray
and full of sleep and sitting
by my fire,
I’ll take down the book
that holds my story
of when I was born and how
and why, then flip
through the chapters
of childhood failures,

then flip past the years
of doubts and defiance,
of shadowed eyes and sorrow-
changed face, and sink
into my velvet chaise chair
and sip my steaming tea
and pet my purring cat

and lean my head
on the shoulder
of my snoozing hubby
and read the last pages
of the story of my life,
the lines just above
and they lived happily
ever after, then pick up my pen

and lower it to the page
and let it flow
and travel
and dance
and journey
and when my eyes

droop closed
my pen will fall
from my sleepy fingers
and roll off the page
trailing in its wake a line of ink
