The Unsent

The Unsent

written by: Thompson Emate

The letter was a revelation,
An invitation into his world,
A journey into what seemed like a mystery,
Something his daughter had longed to know and understand.

As he neared the end of his life,
He didn’t want to leave this world through a crimson sky;
He wanted to ease gently into the night.
He decided it was time to open the door to his inner thoughts.

The letter answered many intriguing questions—
Questions he had been reluctant to face,
Questions that had kept him adrift on a turbulent sea,
Questions that had often caused distance between him and his daughter,
Questions that had severed ties with his son.
He had carried this burden,
Holding on to life while bearing the weight.

In the letter, he explained everything:
The tempest that had rocked the boat of his marriage,
The fierce winds that battered its walls,
The darkness that lingered around it.

He apologized to his daughter,
Acknowledging the pain he had caused her and her siblings.
He accepted the blame for the upheaval surrounding her younger sister’s passing,
And for the other sister who became a recluse and was later lost.
He expressed remorse for their difficult and troubled childhood.

At the end of the letter, he wrote:
“With a grieving heart, I unwind.
With a sorrowful heart, I write this.
I hope to finally transcend through a clear blue sky.
Please forgive me,
And send my apologies to your brother.”
