Words On Granite

Words On Granite

written by: Peggy Gerber

Someone once asked me,
what do you want your headstone to say?
What wise words do you want etched
into the hunk of gray granite
that will glisten over your grave
far longer than you lived?

My lips curled into a knowing smile
because the answer was as clear
as a sparkling diamond

I want my headstone to simply say:
Beloved Wife
Beloved Mother
Beloved Grandmother
because in the end,
nothing else matters.
Only love.

When you’re gone,
unless you were Albert Einstein,
people will forget your accomplishments
faster than Wiley Coyote can run,
no one’s going to care
how many followers you had on Instagram
or if you wore designer clothes,

There is no fame in death.
The thing they will remember
is how much love you gave to them.

I want to live my life giving away
as much love as I can
for as long as I can,
because in the end,
nothing else matters.
Only love.
