You Were the Storm That Came Through

You Were the Storm That Came Through

by another name
one not known by meteorologist
or category.
when you arrived,
I expected a couple of minutes,
but you lasted for months.
you toppled my car,
you ruined my plans,
you broke all the windows in my heart.

there were days I hated you,
times I wished you would go away
back to wherever you came from.
but not everything
can be so easily forgotten
or swept up.
there were days you taught me
what silence really sounds like.

change,
like anything else,
takes time.
even the body remembers touch
long after the mind
forgets.
when I breathe,
I remember the night that
you touched down
not because I hated you,
but because you were unexpected.
something that I thought
I’d forget.
and maybe that’s what love is
staying inside
during the rage of a storm.
anticipation
makes the heart grow fonder.
