Litany

Litany

written by: John RC Potter

Those years, those lovers, those lives, those lies,
as I sit here trying hard to write a conclusion
to a part of my life that was mostly an illusion;
Untruths that wither away can also internalize.

The first reminded me of the sun rising at dawn,
the second of a mote of dust dancing in the light,
the third of all that is silent about the night,
and the fourth of a pencil sketch not fully drawn.

The fifth in this rather inconsequential litany
was the sun and the moon together as they rise,
a ready smile not quite masked by those dark eyes;
not completely the person first presented to me.

What does the future hold for love-starved misfits?
Just this: hope and the promise of a deeper love.
One that starts with fire, not from below but above.
With time we can gather up the pieces and the bits.

A deeper love can be found when least expected
and can be sustained longer when less directed.
Since we first met our time together is measured
not in quantity but the quality of what’s treasured.
Although we do not yet know the final destination,
I will go with you to what is beyond without hesitation.
