Waiting To Be Gently Discovered

written by: The Barefoot Cajun

grounded in the soil
each day i dig as if I’m searching
rich soil delights the edges under my fingernails
minerals move through my body as warriors protecting my immune system
good bacteria enters me fighting off bad disease
a gauge for health is a daily dose of digging
uncovering roots
only to cover them again
i visit with an earthworm who lives under a mr. lincoln tea rose
the worm sees me and approaches
we’re friends
it no longer runs
i’ve named him juicy
he kisses the edges of my fingers, i’m loved
he’s missed me for a couple of weeks, no rain, soil too tough to dig
we think we might like to exchange places one day
i, underground hidden in a world of rich humus laden with exotic minerals
he, finally sees the light, not afraid of being stepped on, to stand on two feet, tall and straight
playing in the dirt allows me, an adult, to be a kid
marveling at the ecosystem right outside my door
we live as one world aligned with the universe knowing there are other lives out there waiting to be gently discovered
