The Pieces We Give Away

giving pieces away-
thinking small shards
made little difference
after all, it’s just a piece!
but over time, over a life
the shards add and compile
and after a while
more is given than remains
what sustains?
when a soul is left in slivers
becoming fragile glass
too weak to use
for the slightest bump
will break and bruise
how does one become whole
when you’ve given away
the very best pieces
of your soul?
do you mend?
when all you did was
break and bend?

but perhaps we can collect
the pieces that remain-
create colorful mosaics
made more beautiful by pain.
