Retrospecting the Retrospectives

Agile, sprints, retrospectives, backlogs…. jargon most Engineers use these days. Internet is filled up with people looking for people with skills in this area. I am personally a fan of the agile working style too, owing to its ability of breaking this down to the simplest steps. However, I have heard many on the internet ranting about the hype the whole agile setup has created. Is it really a hype?

Today I had a little conversation with my six-year-old on our way back home from the daycare. “Hey kid, what do you do in your kindergarten? How does your day go by?” I asked her.

“Mama, as soon as I go, we play for a while until everybody comes, then I eat my breakfast and then we have our Morgen Kreis,” she said. “Morgen Kreis” is a German word which literally means morning round.

“Aha, what do you do in your Morgen Kreis?” I continued.

“We talk about what were the good and bad things from yesterday, activities that are planned for today,” she said. “What else?” I probed. “Each one of us gets the chance to present something and we have lots to assign people’s turns. I got to sing my favorite song today,” said my daughter with so much pride. “Mama, how is your day routine at the office?” she continued.

I smiled at her and said, “My day is pretty much the same. I go early to work, grab my coffee, check my emails until all my colleagues arrive. Then we meet for our ‘Morgen Kreis,’ except that we call it ‘agile, sprints, retrospectives, backlogs and so on…”
