Choices

written by: Laura Bennett

In the depths of her mind, a dichotomy reigns
A never-ending tug-of-war between one and the same
Of shadows that creep in, like a thief in the night
Stealing her peace, leaving an anxious plight
The weight of choices, a burden of the past
An unknown future, like a weather forecast
She’s a creature of contradictions, forever torn in-between
In her dance of duality, she searches for what it means
A rush of thoughts that crowd her mind
With echoes of voices that are left behind
She seeks to escape the obstacles of life
But the cycle continues with a relentless might
Mistakes she has made, perfect she is not
In her quest for freedom, she has given up a lot
She hates this feeling, like a knife to the heart
Drowning ever deeper, tearing her apart
For a moment’s pause, she stood very still
And let the silent tears wash over her will
She felt the pain and the weight of her fear
Knowing that running won’t bring her near
To solace or peace or a calm heart’s reprieve
For in the end, she’d have to come up to breathe
She took a step back, and turned around
And faced the choice that has brought her down
With paths unwinding, life’s journey is long
Once her final decision is made, it won’t be wrong
