Into The Night
written by: Glen Gales
Billions of stars shine their light on billions of snowflakes nested tight.
An owl hoots but isn’t seen.
Unfolds his wings then leaves his tree
He soars silently as he goes, above little houses, in little rows
Wisps of smoke rise up to him, lights wink out… they’re tucking in
The moon is fat, the land is bright, the hunt should be a breeze tonight
Pressing air with a mighty flap, the owl glides forth; not looking back
The houses shrink as the view below reveals a meadow deep in snow
As sparkles twinkle on the field, his piercing eyes search for a meal
Suddenly his gaze detects, a burst of movement to his left
He turns and slowly spirals down…
A cottontail is on the ground!
She hops along atop the white, long shadow cast by stark moonlight
Then abruptly stops. And sits upright…
Her whiskers still… her ears stretched tight…
She listens to… faint jingling bells… high above the majestic owl
Rabbit darts back to her den
Owl spirals back up again
A glowing light as red as roses gently descends upon the houses
Although it is quite far from here, owl recognizes deer
With keen eyesight, he spies a sleigh
And a portly man; with a large red bag
To the wise old owl ’tis a puzzling sight
So he flies far off into the night…
