Spotlight On Writers
Kimber-Lee Basson
- Where do you originate from?
I was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. A land of vivid contrasts where the ocean meets the mountains, and cultures weave together like a living tapestry.
- What do you cherish most about the place you call home?
The people I love. Ending a day on Clifton Beach, mesmerized by the sunsets where time seems to pause. Living abroad in Poland as an expat has made me more vulnerable—teaching me to embrace change, fear, and everything in between. I also cherish how I think and how I’ve grown into a new identity, having been away from African soil for years. I cherish time, something money cannot buy.
- What ignites your creativity?
Agony, most of the time. Mistakes, lessons, and the courage to keep going. Stories of resilience, human connections, and the small details of daily life. Even a fleeting glance or an untold silence can spark poetry within me. Science shows that our bones even play a role in memory and mood, grounding us in ways we often overlook.
- Do you have a favorite word, and could you incorporate it into a poetic phrase?
I don’t have a favourite word. “I am words, and words are me.”
- What is your pet peeve?
I don’t know what it is, but it has everything to do with how I grew up. Since my dad is very empathetic, I struggle to bond or connect with people who lack empathy skills or sincerity.
- How would you describe the essence of Kimber-Lee Basson?
Impulsive, laid-back, and extraordinary. I am a seeker, a storyteller, and a mosaic of strength and softness stitched together. Life is a turbulence, I strive to transform it into something that brings greater meaning and depth, good and bad.
