He checks into room 311.

The silence is almost abrupt. The second hand on the reception desk clock ticks, 10:45:01 AM — and doesn’t stop, each tick lodging somewhere behind his eyes.

Every door he opens leads to another room. Same beds. Same faded curtains. Same stale, musty air. No guests. No staff. Not a soul.

He’s been here for twenty years. Or he checked in this morning. Both seem true.

Just as his breathing quickens, the television flickers on. A man in a suit, who looks almost like him, smiles from the screen.

“Evergreen Motel: Your Staycation Awaits!”
