The Aging Jogger
written by: Ian Fletcher
How his younger self would scorn him now as he plods the streets on his evening jog.
An athlete then, a golden boy! Alas, has it come to this?
Yet he reflects on his peers.
Some have succumbed to smoking, others to booze or drugs, still others to their poor diets and obesity, not to mention the suicides.
As the endorphins kick in, he pities these wrecks no more, for is he not earning his right to life?
He thinks of the words of Tennyson’s aging Ulysses:
“Though much is taken, much abides”
and carries on jogging into the night.
