What Vincent Would Paint
written by: TM Arko
Vincent would paint
Those flowers
He would use
Too much
Paint
Hurriedly
Nervously
Passionately
There must be
Lots of
Yellow
Vincent’s color
The color he had to taste
Sunflowers
Superjacent colors
The multitudinous
Shades
Of the flowers
The vase
The table
The wall
Vincent would paint
Fast
Very fast
A brush in his
Weathered hand
That jounced over
The canvas
The madness
In his eyes
Reflecting
The genius in every stroke
Vincent would paint
That superb autumn
Of
The Mulberry Tree
Vincent would paint
Three pairs
Of
Shoes
Trapped in his poverty
Immured in his misery
The opalescent
Swirling
Colors
Wild deportment
Locked up
Misunderstood
Obsessed by the night
Vincent would paint
Stars
Over the Rhone
The glow of the gas lamps
Yellow gaslight
Against
The green blue field of the sky
The city lights
Dangling
Like stars upon the river
Vincent would paint the
Sulphur sun
Pure cobalt sky
Yellow houses in the sunlight
The freshness
Of blue
There is no blue without yellow and orange
Vincent would paint the Café
At night
The starry night
Olive grove
Irises
And the
Wheatfield with crows
Vincent would paint
The breath of life
With every touch
Of the paintbrush
The breezing wind
Whirling clouds
Dancing stars
Vincent would paint because
He was alive
Consumed
With very strong colors
The gift of God
Amidst the vast darkness
Of
This vapid world
The world that rejected him
The colorless world
Shot while he was painting
They blamed
It on him
When he died
They never realized
Vincent would never paint
Again
