Lessons

She cried last night.
Selfish tears, trying to have her own way.
Young hopes dashed to the ground.
Because her sensible father knew better, and said “no”.

She cried last night.
Some stupid disagreement, root cause already forgotten.
Childish willpower struggling to assert itself.
Sent to bed early, sobbing herself to sleep.

She cried last night.
All she’d wanted was to be treated like an adult.
To be shown respect beyond her meager years.
To have someone listen to her point of view.

I cried last night.
And in the morning I woke her with a kiss.
