To Work

To Work

written by: John Grey

Morning
is a time bomb
set in motion
by knuckles rubbing eyes,
a yawn three yards wide,
a stumble in and out of the bathroom,
the rattle of cups, kettle hiss,
gulps of coffee, cornflakes,
a razor, a nicked chin,
the rifling of an underwear drawer,
hurried dressing, frazzled commute,
an elevator to the third floor,
a cubicle, a chair,
a body plumped down in it
and a sigh
as the wall clock
ticks over to nine.

Morning is a time bomb.
I’ve defused it once again.
