American Depression Carnivals 1930’s

written by: Angel Edwards

Autumn 1933
American depression
Attending the Carnival
small town obsession
visited by almost all

Carnival dismantles
then moves on
to occupy another town
Three hundred
different
carnivals travelled
dirty thirties
so called

Autumn 1934
much is changed
drearier
Hungry people
hungrier
fearful of
approaching winter
Business of
fortunetelling booming
to escape the despair ever looming
fantasy world
carnival people
freaks and famous
shams and scams
make believe
pretense pretend
