A Hero’s Heart

Frail and hunched over,
the body surrenders
to unquenchable exhaustion;
but a hero’s heart dances onward,
sifting through yesterday’s ruins
to unearth tomorrow’s hope.
Traumatized and escaping
further within,
the mind dreads
its tortured encasement;
but a hero’s heart marches ahead
in an unshakable warrior’s bravado.
Shredded nerves dangle
by pulsating threads
of bloody sinew;
but a hero’s heart bears forward,
casting golden rods
into eternity.
