A Little While Longer

A Little While Longer

written by: Christine Piatek

Let me stay a little while longer in the sun.
Earth’s weight is lighter here.
Today, at least, the ruby orange orbs
not blistering the tender soles of barefoot dwellers,
nor sucking dry the last pearl of water
from the only tainted pond in miles.
Forty days without rainwater.
It’s not nature’s doing,
the rush of stifling, murderous heat
racing north like a closing curtain.
It’s a human trouble
with human unraveling,
if we grab hard –
power, resolve and sacrifice,
shared reparation.
The weight of the world is lighter here.
Let me stay a little while longer in the sun.
