A Petition to Return
written by: Deirdre Carney
I can easily be
The way you want
If you let me back.
I can be compact
And fit into your life
So you hardly notice me.
I can be quiet
Giving you peace
To think your big thoughts.
I can be useful
And do mundane chores
You don’t have time for.
I can be fierce
And tell the whole world
It is wrong about you.
I can be thankful
For the moments when
You let me appear.
I can meet
The minimum requirements
Which you have set.
I can forget
That I ever wanted
A different life.
I can believe
That this is the love
Which I deserve.
I can reduce myself
To a tiny speck
Invisible to the naked eye.
