A Reflection

 A Reflection

written by: Carlos Valle

I like deserted places
like factories at night
their barebone architecture,
dust and naked lightbulbs
throwing yellow shadows
onto the deep of night

I like the emptiness
of rusted railroad tracks
overgrown with weeds
and the memories
of the singing wheels
of those metal elephants
their lonely whistles
their smoke and steam

I like cities before dawn
skyscrapers on Sunday mornings
telephone poles and blackbirds
and an empty road ahead
empty lots and mountain tops
scarecrows and deserted fields
desert lands of ancient age
and the lonely voice
of the winter wind,
yes I like deserted places
why–I cannot explain
