A Split-Screen Christmas, 2018

written by: Chad Norman

The sounds of a doe
we know well, eating,
her fawns in winter brown
right beside her hunger
now catching not only
the green grass still available
but filling with the night
and the neighbours’ urgency
for a season I no longer trust.

All the show from yard to yard
inflatable and whirring, sadly
set up before the day of Remembrance,
more of the annual need
to be the other consumers–
not part of how the living deer
decorate their favourite lawns
to enjoy the real gifts of winter.
