Alone in the City

Alone in the City

written by: Thompson Emate

I woke up in a different city,
wondering if I had stepped through a door to another world.
No one was around me,
and I wondered where everyone had gone.
It was a terrifying morning.

I looked out of the window;
There was no one outside—
no vehicles, no commuters, no vendors, and no soul.
Where had everyone gone?
Were they asked to stay indoors?
Then why was I alone in my own home?

I stepped out of my house and started to walk around.
It was not any different—
just empty streets,
empty houses,
and a lifeless ambience.
I couldn’t help but wonder what had happened.

“Where am I?
Someone please tell me this is a nightmare,” I whispered,
shuddering with fear.
Suddenly, I heard a voice,
telling me I was where I had desired to be—
a place like a tranquil sea,
a place with no one, no sound, and no horn.

I sat on a bench until twilight, praying for a change.
Two little birds flew in and landed beside me.
Suddenly, I could hear the rhythmic sound of the wind.
Then each house lit up,
marking the beginning of a new beginning.
