And Earth

And Earth

written by: Alan Mitnick

A pebble
in my boot as I hike
to the peak

away from “no” faces,
from economic downturn,
toward pink granite exposed and worn

I gasp as I push,
gasp as I rise
to count in the valley
the red-orange trees

I shake out the pebble,
it now the second-highest object around,
and as the sunset burns the day to death
I gasp to catch even one more breath.
