Another Page

Where once was smooth and supple, lines pervade
And silver turns her Celtic mane to fair
Where once on downy forearms sunlight played
The parchment skin clings dully, past repair

Where once long regimental rows stood proud
And crumbled tilth lay hungry to be sown
Forget-me-not and dandelion crowd
Stray poppies, claiming refuge of their own

Where once she’d push herself to breaking point
Her youthful vigour cause for blatant pride
In every sinew, fibre, limber joint,
Acceptance lies and marks the ebbing tide

Though time has pared her earthly form, these years
Of time have cultivated hidden strength;
A fortitude derived of age—no fears
Save two, and both the same: this season’s length

She shades her eyes against a cloudless sun;
Lean fingers cup the ever changing stage
Before her. Blackbirds forage for their young,
A buzzard glides. She turns another page
