Christmastimes I Knew

Christmastimes I Knew

The days of this year have come and gone
As Christmas draws near, and lights come on
Out of my window, these pine trees load
Filling their boughs with fluttering snow

Watching it fall from my tabletop
My mood is light, yet heavy in thought
Of fortunate times and poor ones too
That fill the Christmastimes that I knew

On recalling my youthful excitement
Of gifts and treats we would then get
Receiving a bike indeed was great
Useless ‘til spring, I’d patiently wait

There’s the one year a huge snowstorm hit
Stranding us home with window-high drifts
It wasn’t as bad as I had worried
My family was close and in no hurry

Times we went sledding in a snow squall
had snowball fights behind a fort wall
Or years scraping by with little funds
We gave homemade gifts to everyone

One year came wealth, and cheer we could spread
To a needy mother and her kid
With good food and drink, they hopefully
Could know that bad times, don’t have to be

It’s been many good seasons since then
Here now, my wife bakes in the kitchen
Making her confections so tasty
In shapes of bells and bearded faces

As I sip my coffee, spiced and warm
What catches my eye this frosty morn?
The glow of ornaments on our tree
Collected through time, tell a story

The trips we took to where we are now
From milestones to interests we found
Some made by our kids and some are bought
Some will hang low for our cat to swat

I look below to the presents wrapped
Up through the garland to the star cap
Through years, the spirit I’ve come to feel
Santa’s just plastic, Jesus is real
