Claws of Injustice

Claws of Injustice

written by: Saila Abby

The street ran scarlet with the blood of the slain
Hutu militias were on the prowl
Hell on God’s own earth
Rooted in long-standing ethnic tensions
Brothers stabbed each other in the back
As on the day of Abel

The ground mourned gallons full
As mother wept for her young
The Arusha records were a tentative peace
And a President’s assassination fanned the flames
Armed with weapons made available
By one who should be a helper

The extremists used the power vacuum
To target their brothers
Making widows and orphans at the first strike
Kill the cockroaches!

Despite the scale of the atrocities
The international community kept mum
Silent as the grave
Africans are dirt, let them slay each other
Sure! It was 100 days of horror

As the destroyer unleashed his ammo
No retreat, surrender gets you in six feet
It was a dog-eat-dog day!

After thousands were taken from the earth
And when the bellies of the deep were stuffed full
The peacekeepers intervened!

The days gave birth to many heroes
Among whom was Paul Rusesabagina
Who sheltered the 1268 braves in Milles Collines sanctuary

Painful to behold is the sight where God’s children fell
So blunt was the force that snatched their souls
As they held onto the altar
Much like Zechariah of Berachiah
Orphanage homes ransacked, their bellies were stripped of their contents
To wipe out the next gen
Sounds like the massacre of the Jews?

At one time, we wondered how the nation lives on
When the terrors of nightmares still sing through the streets
But they keep pushing onwards
Healing from the inside out
Getting rid of the cancer that caused the conflict

To vanquish the pains, sufferings of people
Who lived, bled, and died
In 1994 Rwanda Genocide
Is trying to catch the wind with your bare hands
