Cogitation

Cogitation

written by: Norberto Franco Cisneros

Sitting by the window
Watching the mild rain pelt the window pain
I lost presence of my self
My mind drifted to spaces within

Places that seemed far away
But as near as my thoughts
Places I found comforting and safe
A place where my dog used to greet me joyously at the door

And the sun shone bright and the air blew clean
Where Hershey and Babe Ruth candy bars cost a nickel,
Matinee movies of cowboys and ‘injuns’ abounded for us
And the parade of songs were sung by Gene Autry and Roy Rogers

The radio blares the sins of the day, politicos squirm
Working people stress going from one thought to another
The truth haunts them as lies beguile them
just as fairies lure dwarfs into a reverie of lofty dreams

Am I a dwarf in a dwarf’s lofty dream?
Or do I dream a dwarf dream pretending my dream is better
my dream feigns to be better but it’s not
the window fogs up, I rise to wipe it

I howl the cry of the dwindling wolf pack
searching better tomorrows and food will be easier to get
like the ones in my father’s yesterdays
life is not easy now for me but how about my children?

In a world full of sustenance for some
why not for the rest of humanity?
“Profits, man, profits! Don’t cha know?
Sure I have a life of wealth but I gotta eat too!”

And the logic escapes the rich
I get up from the rain pelted window
put my apron on, my break ends,
I continue working my twelve-hour shift.
