Don’t Ask What I Do For a Living
written by: Mileva Anastasiadou
I’m not an agent, but I go undercover for people who don’t understand. Sometimes I go out and I have a drink or two, and then I meet people who ask awkward questions. They ask, Where are you from, or, What is your name, and I have to lie and invent things.
I’m not a porn star, but I walk naked sometimes. Because people can’t see me except when I wear clothes, and it feels nice to dress up and go out and dance and get noticed, but then people come closer, and when they touch me, they find nothing.
I’m not a cop, but I police people in a secret, metaphysical way. People don’t like to be told what they should do, the right from wrong, they think they know better, they hear their leaders who mock them, deceive them, and they show respect to their leaders and believe all their lies.
I’m not your shattered dreams, your guilt, your forgotten loves, the pain you think you left behind, but I also walk in mysterious ways because you can’t face me, you can’t lift the carriage I am holding, you can’t handle the truth I will tell you, when your turn comes.
I’m not alive, but I walk among you. I hold your future in my hands, like a fragile present I’m gonna hand you someday, for I’m the Spirit of Christmas Yet To Come, and I can let it drop right now if you keep asking the wrong questions, and you will have it shattered, broken, destroyed, when your turn comes.
