I’m Home

I’m Home

written by: Beth Warren

Sun visors, caps, and wide-brimmed hats
Singlets, cropped tops, T-shirts
Shorts, bike pants, bikini bottoms, exposing too much bottom
Sarongs, beach towels tucked into swimming trunks
I’m home

Sunscreen that smells like coconut
Red patches of sunburnt skin
Zinc cream on noses
I’m home

Crowded beach path with holidaymakers
Dogs of all shapes and sizes strain to roam
Children on scooters, teens on skateboards
Bicycles weaving in and out
I’m home

Flawless sky, without a single cloud
Sun blazing in early morn
Powdery, soft yellow and white sand
Brilliant light dulled by sunglasses
I’m home

The squeak of swings
Children’s giggles as they reach dizzying heights
The scratch of wax on surfboards
The cawing of seagulls
The sound of the ocean
I’m home

Norfolk pines, tall and imposing
Palms scorched golden by the sun
Flaming Poinciana trees
I’m home

Twisting flashes of grey and pink galahs overhead
Raucous cockatoos cluster and screech in nearby trees
Kookaburras send news regally through their bush telegraph
Monogamous lorikeets travel two by two,
I’m home

Our veranda overlooks the lake
Where fuchsia lilies bob on the water
Tall papery gum trees provide shade and shelter
While honeyeaters feast on bottlebrush
I’m home

Two recliners sitting side by side
Trays holding our dinner
Watching our favourite show
Peter looks across at me
I’m home

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

Many things remind us of home, especially if you have lived in other countries. These are some of the things I love about my home in Australia.
