In The Deep
written by: E.J. Garner
Deep in Appalachia
Down in the forests
I run through the trees,
Red eyes watch me.
The beat of his wings
The scent of the smoke
His beady eyes watch
as he slowly approaches.
I dash through the forest,
My lungs aching for air
Deep in the forest
I know that he’s there.
Larger than life
Half moth, half man
I know that tonight,
Is my last night alive.
In the deep of Appalachia,
Down in the holler
The beast tears into me
and my screams fall silent.
E.J Garner is a poet whose work seeks to capture the intersections of identity, resilience, and connection. As a security dispatcher by profession, E.J spends much of their time in the quiet hours of the night—an atmosphere that naturally lends itself to reflection and writing. The stillness between calls becomes a space for words, where fleeting images and emotions are transformed into poetry. Outside of writing, E.J Garner values community and storytelling, believing that poetry has the power to bring people together, create understanding, and honor voices that too often go unheard. Whether writing late at night, sharing poems with friends, or submitting work to journals, E.J continues to grow into their role as a poet, striving to create work that resonates deeply and lingers long after the page is turned.
