Little Bird

written by: Abdulreza Alvari

Oh, little bird, the lonely prisoner of the golden cage,
sing, sing.
How nice you sing! Luring and pleasant.
Like a nice lullaby, soothing a child to sleep,
It gives me pleasure and peace,
Though sad, you sing.
What you say, and what you sing, I don’t know.
I can’t understand your bird language,
I just know that it’s sad, I like it, however.

Oh, lonely bird, prisoner of the golden cage,
Why is it so? Why are you singing so sadly?
Maybe you have missed the nice flights you had
In the heart of the blue sky.
Maybe you are in love
And you are just singing of love.
It might also be for your loneliness,
and you are complaining of being alone, in a cage,
So, you are singing so sorrowfully.

Oh, nice little bird,
have you missed anything, anyone?
Perhaps you have missed a dear,
missing your beloved ones
parents, friends, or perhaps a lovely mate.
I don’t know, nobody either.
Who knows what’s going on in the heart of a lonely bird,
that is crouching in the corner of a cage?
Nobody, I think, except for the bird itself.

Paradoxical! Sad you sing little bird,
but your sad song
makes me happy and sad at the same time,
isn’t it strange? It is strange!
It’s a bittersweet song, one can say
Giving pleasure and joy on the one hand
And arousing sadness, sorrow, and pain! on the other.
It might be because your song has a sad melody,
But, at the same time, it is also beautiful.

Well, that’s what a bird’s song can do
So,
Sing your nice song, dear little bird.
Continue,
sing your lovely song.
