Looking Back

Looking Back

written by: Jan Sargeant

the light went out years ago,
around the same time the pubs called last orders
and the park gates closed at eight,
five in winter, drawn curtains flickering
when clocks turn back and you wonder
how many more winters will
glisten as hoar frost through frozen tears
while deep fears huddle at the edges
of a mind torn in two

where were you
when Cyclops stamped through skies
seeing only the hint of a wind
rustling through leaves and your lies
were you tiptoeing through
shadows cast by a full moon
against a sun’s eclipse

when the light went out,
did you hear them call last orders,
did you see the park gates close,
did you stand and look through gaps
in lives you didn’t know,
did you see winter in my eyes

did you sense the snow?
