Love Can Be a Hollow Promise

Love Can Be a Hollow Promise

written by: Jane Bradshaw

Your words ring through my ears
Broken, hollow, and empty
You promised to cherish me
To protect me from the dark
To keep me warm and safe
And to love me endlessly
And forever

You promised so many things
That we would be happy
Forever
That time would go slowly
That I would never be alone
Again
And to love me – Always

You spoke in different languages
Words filled with music
Poetry and romance
You danced just out of
Reach
You sang a flawless melody
Off-key

Now I realise how
Truly cruel and despicable
You were, and are
To crush someone’s heart
So carelessly
To ruin the joy of words
With your hollow lies

But fear not
For I shall rise again
Slightly more jaded
And maybe less trusting
But I refuse to live
In an empty
And hollow world
