Merciful Rain

Merciful Rain

written by: Phyllis Souza

Dementia is her name, and her mind feels foggy. She can’t think clearly, trapped inside a brain full of strangers.

Rain, a gentle healer, offers comfort. Falling steadily, it delivers nourishing waters, a calming balm for her troubled mind.

“Close your eyes, my dear. Let me wash away your worries with kindness—something you may have forgotten still exists.”

Like a gentle touch, Rain renews Dementia’s spirit.

A smile appears on her face as she remembers the time she felt down and confided in Rain.

Rain, the silent listener, sensed her sadness.

“I was foolish.”

“You were a child and didn’t eat the spaghetti sauce like you said.”

Dementia chuckles, “I forgot about that spaghetti sauce. My mother was so mad when my father told her he loved the soup.”

Rain’s laughter echoes with joy.

“It’s funny. I remember things from a long time ago, but I can’t recall what I did yesterday or today.”

“Dementia, it doesn’t matter what happened yesterday or today. One day—whether it’s today or tomorrow—you’ll slide down a wet slide and dip into a fountain of memories.”

“I love you, Rain.”

The rain stops.

Dark clouds part, clearing the way.
