Never Trust A Ouija Board

Mandy and her friends sat in a circle as candles flickered around them. Her parents had gone to visit family overnight and said she could have a sleepover. Little did they know that she was going to do a seance. It was Halloween, and knowing that the veil was thin, she invited three of her friends to stay over. Once they had handed out candy to the trick-or-treaters, they assembled in the basement and retrieved the Ouija board that she had hidden there. A week earlier, she had gone into a new shop in town and seen it. The owner, an older man, told her it was on sale and would give her hours of fun. After paying, he smiled, and she could have sworn his eyes glowed red. Shaking her head, she looked again, but they were just regular brown.
Now sitting there, they all stared at it as it sat in the center. “I don’t know about this Mandy. Maybe we shouldn’t do it tonight.” Katie was the worrier of the bunch. Groaning, Selena rolled her eyes. “Stop being a baby. We’re freshmen in college and practically adults. We can use a Ouija board sensibly. Maybe you should go upstairs and get your stuffed bear.” Bella nudged her. “Apologize for being mean. If Katie doesn’t want to do it, that’s fine, but don’t make fun of her.” Mandy stood up. “Look, we’re all friends here. No more putting anyone down or making fun of them. Who wants to do this with me? A show of hands.” Everyone but Katie raised their hands, and she nodded at her. “That’s okay. Go upstairs and relax. I have some Halloween movies lined up for after we finish this. Have some snacks if you want.”
Katie stood up, looking at them. “You can think I’m a baby, Selena, but I have a bad feeling about this. Please be safe.” She turned to go, and they heard her walk up the steps. “Now that Chicken Little is gone, let’s do this.” Mandy and Bella gave her a look, and she shrugged. “Well, she never goes along with anything. Okay, I’m sorry. Can we do this now?”
Nodding, Mandy and her friends held hands. They did a silent prayer for protection, and all three put their fingers on the planchette. “Who should we call upon?” Bella smiled. “How about Elvis. He was hot when he was young. Even though I wasn’t born then.” Selena rolled her eyes. “No, let’s just do a chant and see who appears. We’re safe and all.” Mandy said, “So long as it’s not someone evil, we’re good. Let me do the talking.” They nodded, and she closed her eyes. “We call upon a good spirit on this Halloween night. If there is a good spirit around, please come through. We just want to talk.” Minutes later, their planchette moved. “Holy crap, someone’s here!” Selena’s eyes widened in excitement.
Bella gasped. “Ask its name.” Mandy cleared her throat. She didn’t expect an answer. “What is your name?” It moved quickly, spelling out the word. “Lucien. That’s an odd name. How old are you?” Again, it moved, and their eyes widened when it said, “Very old.” Bella looked at them. “I don’t feel good about this. We should have called up Elvis.” The planchette moved faster, and they looked to see what it wrote. “I’m better than him. I have powers.” Gasping, Bella took her fingers away. “Okay, we need to say goodbye and let it leave.” A loud bang had them jump, and Mandy looked down to see it writing again. “You can’t dismiss me, little girls. I’ll see you soon.” That was enough for them. Mandy did a prayer and said goodbye, taking the board, placing it back in its box. “I think that’s enough for me. Let’s go upstairs and see what Katie’s up to.”
Blowing out the candles, they walked into the living room to see Katie sitting there, staring straight ahead. “Hey, Katie. We’re going into the den to watch some movies. Did you find anything you like?” She didn’t answer, still sitting there. “What’s wrong with her? Why isn’t she moving?” Selena walked over and tapped her shoulder. “Are you alright? Katie?” Slowly turning her head, her eyes were red, and an evil grin was on her face. “I’m fine, you bitch. Better than ever.” Moving back, eyes wide, Selena said, “I don’t think Katie’s here right now.”
Mandy saw her friend stand up, and in her hand was a knife. “What are you doing with that? Katie?” Cackles filled the room, and chills ran up her spine. Bella gasped. “She’s possessed. Is that you, Lucien?” A sinister grin on her face, Katie nodded. “Yes. You’re friend was easy to possess. She’s coming back to hell with me, as are you three.” He growled, and they saw sharp teeth dripping with saliva. Mandy screamed and said, “Run!” Going to the front door, they tried to open it, but it wouldn’t budge. “Upstairs. Now!” They ran as the spirit slowly walked after them, the knife in its hand. “Go into my parents’ room. It has a lock.” Running inside, Bella sat on the bed. She began to shake. “It’s going to kill us, Mandy. What do we do? How do we get Katie back?”
Selena hugged her; she was crying. “I’m so sorry. I should never have said to call up anything. We should have called upon Elvis. What are we going to do, Mandy?” They heard it climbing the stairs, a growl on its lips. “Let me think. I said goodbye on the Ouija board, so there has to be a way. Damn, I wish I had brought salt up here. We could have made a circle of protection.”
It banged on the door, its voice dark and evil. “You can’t escape me. I want souls, and I’m going to get yours!” The door blew open, and it stood there, no longer looking like Katie but a demon. A very large demon with huge red eyes and sharp claws. “Stupid girls. Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to play with a Ouija board on Halloween? I guess Master didn’t tell you that, did he, Mandy?”
Her eyes widened. The owner of that new shop. “He wasn’t human?” The demon laughed. “No, just borrowed someone’s skin. You really should never trust someone you don’t know. Hmm, who shall I take first? Maybe you!” He pointed at Selena, who started crying harder. “No, I don’t want to go with you. I’m sorry, Katie. I didn’t mean to make you feel bad. I’ll never do it again. I swear!” The demon laughed. “She’s not here anymore. Told me to tell you she’ll make sure you never do it again. While you’re screaming for mercy!” It laughed, and the smell of its breath was like death itself.
Mandy felt like this was all her fault. If she hadn’t bought the stupid board, this would be happening. Looking around, she noticed a small crucifix on the wall. Her parents weren’t very religious, but had gotten it on a trip to Italy. It had been blessed by the Pope. Slowly moving back to get it, she grabbed it off the wall, standing in front of Selena.
“You can’t have her! Bring Katie back now, or I’ll stick this in your chest!” The demon’s eyes opened in surprise, and it laughed. “You have to believe for it to work. Stupid girl.” He moved toward them, and Mandy shouted as she jammed the cross into the demon’s chest. “I do believe, and you’re going back to hell where you belong!”
Its red eyes opened in shock as smoke came out of its mouth. The room seemed to glow as the creature roared. They heard the clock on her parents’ nightstand chime, and Bella looked over. “It’s midnight, Mandy. Halloween is over!” Mandy watched the demon disappear, shouting in pain as flames licked up his body. Minutes later, it was gone, and she fell to the floor, her heart beating so fast, she couldn’t breathe. Selena and Bella went to her, as they hugged. “Mandy, talk to us. Are you alright? Mandy!” Looking up, tears fell down her cheeks. Her voice was hoarse from yelling. “Where’s Katie? He got her!” They all started to cry, and then a voice startled them. “What’s wrong? What’s happened?”
Looking up, they saw Katie standing there, her stuffed bear in one hand. Selena was the first one up, hugging her tightly. “You’re alright. I’m so, so sorry for what I said earlier. Have all the stuffed animals you want. I’ll never be mean to you again.” Katie hugged her back, a smile on her face. “What the hell happened here? You all look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Mandy and Bella stood up and hugged her, all of them standing there in relief. Mandy sighed. “It’s a long story. I’ll tell you tomorrow. How about we make some ice cream sundaes and watch a movie?” Katie looked at them. “I was thinking we could do the Ouija board again. I’m ready now.” All three shouted, “NO!” at the same time. Linking her arm with her, Mandy said, “I think we’ve had enough excitement for tonight. That board is going back to the store tomorrow. Come on.”
They walked downstairs, and after getting their dessert, went into the den to watch some movies. It was almost morning before the three fell asleep. They watched Katie, holding her bear as she slept peacefully.
The next day, Mandy went to the new shop in town to return the Ouija board. They had told Katie what happened while having breakfast, and she couldn’t believe it. As she walked up the block, she stopped. The store was gone, and in its place was a new one. Walking in, she saw a lady who smiled at her. “Hello, dear, how can I help you?” Mandy looked around. “Yes, I was wondering where the other shop went? The one where I got this from?” Coming from around the counter, she took the box, looking at it. “We’ve been here for two weeks now. Are you sure the store was here?” Shaking her head, the woman looked at her. “I’m afraid you were tricked. This board is very dangerous, even if you know how to use it. Would you like me to get rid of it for you?” Mandy was wary. Why was she being so helpful? “I said goodbye when we finished. Why would you do this for me?”
Sighing, her eyes twinkling, the woman said, “Let’s just say, I’m invested in keeping good souls like yourself safe. You can trust me. Angel’s honor.” That was a strange thing to say. The woman smiled warmly. “Run, along, dear, and never use one of these again.” Mandy would never forget what happened last night. “Don’t worry. I won’t. I learned my lesson. Thank you.”
The woman watched as she left and looked up, “He tried and failed. We’ll have to make sure it doesn’t happen next Halloween.” Shaking her head, she walked to the back room and, waving a hand over the board, watched it fade until it was gone.
