Red & Black

written by: Maryam Kekere-Ekun

If you ask me what your favorite color is_I’ll say red and black because_red is the hue that decorates your smile & black is the name you engraved on my soul_red is the armor that soothes your pain when you wage war against my silence & black is the dye that outlines my scars that are stamped on my skin_red is the feeling you savor when you embrace my loneliness & black is this life of thorns you swoon over_red is the sheet that wrings timidness out of you & black is the syrup you crave to bring you out of fear_red is the tear that wets your lashes when you hum a soulless tune & black is the string that lulls my heart to beat again.
