She Did Good (Father of the Bride)

She Did Good

(Father of the Bride)

written by: Kewayne Wadley

Father of the bride,
I had this conversation with myself
not the first time we met,
not the second,
nor the third.
I pictured the look
you’d have on your face.
The skepticism,
the irritation of hearing one side of the story
and wanting to protect your baby girl.

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you
How these things go,
or even how they work out
If they do.
I am not perfect.
I’ve made mistakes.
So has your daughter.
But neither of us are perfect,
and that’s what brought us closer
wandering the darkness
of being in a world together,
to know each other,
and pretend the other doesn’t exist.

Father of the bride,
In truth, you’ve raised your daughter right.
If the slightest thing seems off,
She’s attentive,
paying attention to every little detail
Just like you taught her.

Eventually she pushed me outside
to join the rest of the things
that didn’t sit right with her
the push and pull of getting to know each other,
the thought of insecurity
as a best friend
until we both realized.
It’s not a friend at all.

That being cautious is one
of the most human instincts.
But so is failing to see
the important things
we surround ourselves with every day.
We begin to miss the little things
We adore about each other
me and your daughter.
One of the only women I’ve ever met
who looks at me
the way she does.
Of all the friends in the world,
not many people call you consistently
just to check on you,
even when they’re mad.
And I don’t want to know
if there are more women like this out there.

Father of the bride,
I am going to marry your daughter.
Maybe not tomorrow.
Maybe not in the next few months.
But I am going to marry that woman.

And when I do,
I want to see you nod in approval
Out of my peripheral,
muttering the words
She did good.
