Singing the Blues in Red and Pink

written by: Amita Sarjit Ahluwalia

You look like a gypsy with those long earrings
And a dress made up of red and white dishcloths
Striped, checked, polka-dotted, with a bandana headscarf tied in a cheeky bow
To match the twisted red cummerbund at your waist
Against the pale blond sand and pale blue sea and sky
Under a milky sun, you are like a red bhoot jholakia chilli from Assam
And it’s just that I need something to hold onto
Like the rumpled red sheets with the pink and white and blue chintz print
And matching pillows with pale pink piping along the edges
O for a glass of the warm South, the true, the blushful Hippocrene!
Jalapeño, Jalapeño, Jalapeño!
A great relief to collapse with an ice-cream tub
Turns out, it’s Strawberry!
Cherries blossom in a blue-framed print on a pink wall.
The mood is music. Jazz, Blues.
La Vie en Rose. She comes around.
Singing the Blues in Red and Pink.
