Somewhere, Another Child Dies

Somewhere, Another Child Dies

written by: Diana Burns

You say that it’s not final,
Death’s bite –
Do I hear you right?

I want to obliterate
A-fucking-nihilate
This endless night – so dark, so cold
I want to give up my breath
Tear out my heart
And offer it in exchange
But the Gods,
They are silent in their disdain
Oblivious to my pain

I reject, I despise
All the cliché and lies
Still, they talk of a hereafter
Filled with laughter
Angel’s shiny wings
Lots of pretty things

Looking out at the world through screaming eyes
Numbly nodding at that which I hear not
Hating all who minimise, romanticise
This finality we call death

I want to obliterate
A-fucking-nihilate
This endless night – so dark, so cold
I want to give up my breath
Tear out my heart
And offer it in exchange
But the Gods,
They are silent in Their disdain
Oblivious to my pain.

I’m bleeding, I’m crying,
Fading and dying
My child, my little girl’s gone
Do you think I give a fuck about your semantics?

She was not a rose or an angel
Taken for her beauty, by the powers that may be –
Would you trivialise my despair
With your platitudes,
Would you dare?

I want to obliterate
A-fucking-nihilate
This endless night – so dark, so cold
I want to give up my breath
Tear out my heart
And offer it in exchange
But the Gods,
They are silent in Their disdain
Oblivious to my pain

Looking out at the world through screaming eyes
As somewhere, another child dies.
