The Hummingbirds Won’t Sing Again

The Hummingbirds Won’t Sing Again

I know a place in the world
Where the hummingbirds won’t sing again
The pine trees have lost their needles
Their trunks are empty hulls of memories

I know a place in my vicinity
Where the cavorting kids won’t ever tread
Where the grandmas won’t lull their daughters and babies
Where laughter has been trampled underfoot

I know a place in Athens
Where shrieks of joy gave way to terror
Where the devil locked people in a deadly embrace
Where the twins won’t bask in their mother’s caress

I know a place in Athens
where people have lost their baptism
where children got irrevocably marked
with the abominable seal of the Beast
